How to open an MBOX file on Windows 10 and 11

Windows cannot open MBOX files on its own. Here are the steps that work, plus the common problems and how to fix them.

Windows does not include any program that understands MBOX files. If you double-click one, Windows will ask which app to use, and choosing Notepad only shows the raw source. The steps below give you a readable message list in a few minutes.

Before you start with MBox Viewer

First, make the file extension visible so you can see exactly what you are working with.

  • Windows 11: open File Explorer, choose View → Show → File name extensions.
  • Windows 10: open File Explorer, select the View tab and tick File name extensions.

If your MBOX file arrived inside a ZIP, such as a Google Takeout download, extract it first. Right-click the ZIP and choose Extract All. Reading a file directly from inside a ZIP often fails.

Path length tip: Takeout folders have long names. Extract them to a short location such as C:\Mail to avoid “path too long” errors in Windows.

Method 1: open the MBOX file with MBox Viewer

MBox Viewer is a free, open-source Windows program. It runs without an installer and leaves the file untouched.

  1. Download the MBox Viewer ZIP from the download section of this site. It comes straight from SourceForge's file server.
  2. Right-click the ZIP, choose Extract All and pick a short folder such as C:\Tools\MBoxViewer.
  3. Open the extracted folder and double-click mboxview64.exe (64-bit Windows) or mboxview.exe (32-bit).
  4. On the first start, choose a folder for the program's temporary and index files.
  5. Click File → Select folder… and pick the folder that contains your MBOX file. Click the file in the Mail Archive Tree, then click any mail in the list to read it.

Attachments are listed with each message, and pictures can be previewed. Large archives take longer the first time while an index is built.

Method 2: import into Thunderbird instead of MBox Viewer

If you want to keep the messages in a full mail program, Thunderbird is free and works well on Windows.

  1. Install Thunderbird. You can skip adding an email account.
  2. Open the menu, choose Add-ons and Themes and install ImportExportTools NG.
  3. Right-click Local Folders, choose ImportExportTools NG → Import mbox file.
  4. Select the file. A new folder appears with the messages.

This copies the mail into Thunderbird's profile, so it uses extra disk space. It is a better fit for long-term use than for a one-time lookup.

What about Outlook and MBox Viewer?

Classic Outlook for Windows uses PST files and has no option to import MBOX directly. People usually import into Thunderbird first and then move the messages through an IMAP account, or use a paid conversion tool. If you only need to read the mail, a viewer is far simpler.

Keep the original safe when using MBox Viewer

Before trying anything, copy the MBOX file to a second location. The viewer never writes to the file, but some import tools and converters do, and a backup costs nothing.
